This story appears in the February issue of. There must be a better way of meeting people than hanging out in a bar, thought Jose de Lasa, now 32, while attending Tulane Law School in New Orleans and doing just that. The idea stayed in the back of his mind even after becoming a lawyer in While de Lasa went to Barnes and Noble to research how to write a business plan , Graham McAden, 28, a public relations account executive for consumer products such as Burger King, languished at his job and told friends about the “socializing service” he dreamed of opening. Then one day a friend told him someone had already done his idea. Rather than giving up, McAden called De Lasa to “brainstorm” about the industry. A lunch powwow turned into a partnership, and by , McAden had matched de Lasa’s initial investment and the twosome headed a revamped activities service dubbed Social Circles. The service, which organizes outings such as rock climbing and swing dancing for singles, sends its members a monthly calendar detailing upcoming events. Interested parties then contact Social Circles to sign up. The New York City company gears all activities toward beginners and keeps the groups small, gender-balanced and segregated from outsiders.

Whereas archaeomagnetic dating followed a well-established, reliable measurement protocol, dating of archaeological mortar by optically stimulated luminescence using the single grain technique represents quite new, exploratory approach that allows direct dating of the moment of edification.
Luminescence dating showed that mortars were well bleached. Variations of the dose rate due to the heterogeneous distribution of radioelements in the matrix were observed.

Dating buildings is important for survey reports: particularly for conservation appraisals, archaeological assessments, and for predicting age-related latent defects, such as Georgian ‘snapped-header’ walls, inter- wars ‘Regent Street Disease’, or post-war high-alumina cement concrete deterioration1. When a building is original, and typical of its period, its age can usually be judged by its external appearance alone.
Every era has its distinctive architectural styles, ranging from wavy roofs of the s, to bow-backed Georgian terraces of the s. But when a building is nondescript, atypical a folly , has been altered, extended or overclad, we need to examine its structure. Structural materials, components, and systems have varied through the ages. Knowing their periods of use can establish the era and evolution of a building.
Interiors are sometimes refitted and finishes renewed, but the structure beneath them is only changed if it becomes damaged, or if it is redeveloped behind a retained facade.

Upon encountering a new site, the archaeologist immediately requires information about its age in order to set it in context with other sites. In research into our heritage the conservationist or architect may be able to date the general period of a building he is working with from either the situation, materials of construction, type of timber joints or other stylistic features.
Almost certainly the century or portion of a century when it was built may be assigned with some certainty. However, as more and more work is done and increasing numbers of structures with complex constructional phases are encountered, the general features may not be sufficient to give the accuracy in dating that is currently required.
If research into other sources of information also fails to throw light on the building’s history, resort may be made to the various scientific methods of dating.
The Soho lounge, which is called The Hive , is actually more than what it seems. In fact, the spot could primarily become a cool networking space for folks to engage with other humans IRL—not just a place for the birds and bees to meet. This paper considers how the data returned by radiocarbon analysis of wood-charcoal mortar-entrapped relict limekiln fuels MERLF relates to other evidence for the construction of medieval northern European masonry buildings. A review of previous studies highlights evidence for probable residuality in the data and reflects on how this has impacted on resultant interpretations. A critical survey of various wood-fired mortar materials and lime-burning techniques is then presented, to highlight evidence suggesting that a broad spectrum of different limekiln fuels has been exploited in different periods and that growth, seasoning, carriage and construction times are variable.
It is argued that radiocarbon analysis of MERLF fragments does not date building construction directly and the heterogeneity of the evidence demands our interpretations are informed by sample taphonomy.
Bumble, the popular dating app, is opening a brick-and-mortar location.
The best experience someone can have using a dating app is swiping for a friend whose tastes and preferences vary significantly from their own. Using the app for yourself? A user of dating apps herself, Bartter said she could see dating app fatigue develop in friends and colleagues who would get frustrated at having to filter through so many profiles to find a suitable match. I was also able to match my friends with people they may miss or swipe past, having a very specific guideline for what they looked for.
Bartter soon found herself turning this into a paid service, which grew organically before officially launching as Matchsmith last year. There are three different tiers of service offered. She will report back to clients weekly, with the client left to take it from there and actually, well, go on the date. Bartter has an introductory call with each new client across the three tiers.
With Bartter targeting 25 to 65 year olds, she said around 60 to 70 percent of her clients are women who are looking for a long term relationship, and those new to the dating pool who want to meet a variety of people. Bartter acknowledges the competition — matchmaking is nothing novel, after all, while online dating coaches have also risen to prominence. But, she believes the personalised approach she takes is what sets Matchsmith apart.
